Myth #1: Designer goods are the best thing to sell on eBay
This is simply not true. In reality, designer goods are the hardest products to acquire.
If you’re lucky, you might be able to find them, but will you make a massive profit on them? Probably not. eBay buyers usually only want to pay 50% of the RRP. Designer goods are also very high risk, especially for new sellers, as 95% of suppliers online sell very convincing fakes. In many cases, even the supplier has no idea they are fake!
Myth #2: Electronics are extremely profitable
Absolutely not. Electronics are probably the worst possible items to sell. Yes they are popular sellers, but they are not the most profitable item for sellers. Most electronics sellers are titanium powersellers who only make money simply because they can buy and sell in vast quantities (i.e. $250,000+). Even so, they only make a few dollars profit on each item.
Myths #3: Top of the line, hot brand name products can be purchased wholesale for 25% of the retail cost, minimum order 1
No. Brand name products usually have high minimum order quantities (MOQs) and the margin between the wholesale price and the eBay retail price is often quite small.
Myth #4: eBay is a wholesalers market
For some items, eBay is actually below wholesale. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to expect that everything will sell for 50% or less of the RRP on eBay. Other auction sites will be about the same, maybe slightly better, and your own website should be better than that.
